And he is 2. Every bit 2.
The Negatives...He is quick to throw a tantrum and does so several times a day. So far, our strategy of telling him that he has to go have tantrums in his bedroom has worked to curb them for the most part. He is grumpy when he first wakes up in the morning and from nap. He is trying so hard to assert his independence and hates to be told "no." He especially doesn't understand a "no" when it comes after he asks something nicely. He occasionally throws and hits, is SUPER possessive of "his spot" on the couch, and wants to do everything "by myself".
On the positive side...
He is mostly super sweet and cuddly. My heart melts when he says, "Mommy, I want to hold you on the sofa" or "wuv you Mommy...night night". He is sweet to his little sister (mostly) and loves to help feed her snacks and swing beside her on the swingset. He still loves to be held when he is tired. He laughs and smiles up a storm.
He is already totally into electronics and probably knows more about them than I do. He loves to watch Sesame Street, Super Why, and Curious George. He plays Sesame Street games on the computer, loves to play and read on my Kindle Fire, and asks to play Wii Sports every day.
He is soooo observant and inquisitive. He watches carefully out the windows when we drive and asks all sorts of questions about what he sees. He also remembers which streets we turn on to get to certain places and questions us when we go the wrong way. He remembers every logo he has seen once and is learning more from Sesame Street than I ever imagined possible. Just this last week, he looked at our remote and saw the logo printed at the bottom and said, "This is Time Warner Cable, Mommy." Seriously? Then, he pointed to a diamond on our pool table and told Phil it was a rhombus. (We are NOT practicing rhombuses on a regular basis at home, for sure!) He memorizes new books after reading them two or three times. His memorization power is a little intimidating...even for mom and dad!
He is very serious about his playtime, which is about 60% Cars, 30% balls/sports, 5% blocks and puzzles, and 5% everything else. His imagination is growing, and it is so fun to hear him acting out little stories with his cars in his room. He knows the names of all the Cars from the movie and loves to stage races with them. He likes to play with others, but often needs quiet time away from people to recharge. At these times, he just wanders into his room and lays quietly on the floor pushing cars or reading books to himself.
He still loves sports, and we can't wait to get him into soccer and t-ball in the upcoming year. Right now, he is only old enough for swim lessons. He loves swimming and is currently going about 8-10 feet underwater by himself. He plays in the backyard every day, with every imaginable kind of ball. He hits t-balls over the fence, can drive a golf ball the entire length of the yard, and is a great basketball shot. It's kind of scary actually.
School has been a real transition for him this year, and I am still not sure he has gotten over moving to a new one. He often asks to go "back to the other school with Miss Missy". He is the oldest in his class this year, and that has been harder for him. He has shied away from making friends this year and hardly talks about the kids in his class. We are not sure why this is and continue to be patient as he figures it out. We try to get details from him each day after school, but he generally won't give answers as to what they did that day or who he played with. We hope he still loves it, though!
All in all, he is still a super kid, and we love being parents to him more than anything else in the world! We are so proud of him and the big boy he is starting to become. Love you, Lucas!
